Dedication To Excellence with Richard Field
We are joined by Richard Field to discuss how he became the youngest member to have been accredited by the BACD.
Dentistry isn’t just about maintaining a happy and healthy smile with patients. There is much more to becoming a successful dentist. Countless CPD courses, hours of treatment planning, thousands of photographs and over analysing your cases and numerous yearly conferences to attend, to name a few.
We are joined by Richard Field on our podcast ‘Dental Leaders’, with Payman Langroudi and Prav Solanki, to discuss his dental journey with us, and also how the BACD conference changed his dental journey and how he was the youngest member to be accredited by the BACD.
“I get very tunnel-vision when I’m working. Nothing else exists. Just the teeth.”
How did attending the BACD change his views on dentistry?
Richard, believe it or not initially wanted to be a chef and planning to go to catering school, then wanting to be a vet, but, after finding out he was allergic to most animals he then started his dentistry work. He attended university in Glasgow and while he was studying his teachers asked if any students could help out at a conference as part of extra curriculum. This is where Richard attended the BACD conference for the first time.
Richard Field: “The key turning point was there was one lecture. It was a panel discussion between Chris Orr, Ken Harris, and James Russell, and that was the defining moment. From my point of view, it changed my life, that conference. If I hadn’t met those people, if I hadn’t seen what you could actually do as a dentist, besides from fillings and removable dentures.”
Dentistry isn’t just about fillings and dentures, it’s a process that can really change people’s lives. It can give the patient that confidence they never had. Chris Orr, Ken Harris and James Russell are all qualified professional dentists and have all been accredited by the BACD. They all specialise in different areas of dentistry, and at the time of Richard attending, he was able to open his eyes to multiple avenues of dentistry and be around extremely talented and knowledgeable dentists from a young age! As Albert Einstein says –
Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.
Because what’s the point of success if you can not help anyone with it?
Apart from the obvious answer of, ‘a lot of hard word and dedication’,
Goals and Advice
It goes without saying that hard work and determination in the world of dentistry goes a long way. However, what is it that makes success within this field of work?
start answering this with the questions he sends over and conclude.
Goals
A goal without a plan is just a desire
In the podcast, Richard speaks about setting goals…sounds easy enough. What he means by this isn’t just to set yourself everyday goals, but to really think about what you want to achieve in the next 10 years of your career.
Richard set himself 2 goals in his 20’s, and for them to be reached by 30.
- “To be accredited before he was 30”.
- “To be working in a private practice full time”.
Both of these goals were reached before his 30th birthday. With determination and a passion for what he wanted to achieve, he made it happen. After his hard work had paid off and he has achieved what he wanted from his goals, he focused on how he could improve the quality of his work.
- “Don’t compare yourself to other dentists”, allow yourself to learn and take steady advice, however, it is important to believe in your own work.
- “There is more to life than your job, maintain a happy medium with your job and your work”. Allow yourself those days of being the best at what you do but allow your life to stay separate from your work.
- “Don’t make the patient’s problem your problem, you haven’t given them this issue, you are there to help them fix and solve the issue”.
But all in all, what was the key turning point in his career? It was just one main thing: attending a lecture from the British Academy Of Cosmetic Dentistry (BACD).
